GYG was started by people who had left “university trying to fill the gap or missing all those events, and also trying to do something other than a ball or a tavern night, but trying to actually engage with the culture and what it means to be Greek, and Greek-Australian as well. It’s not just, you know, partying and smashing plates.

Footscray's Hidden Hellenism
Footscray is an inner-West suburb of Melbourne, renowned for its multiculturalism. During the 60-80s it was heavily populated, and therefore influenced, by the recently arrived Greeks.
Though the street presence and cultural prominence of this era is largely gone, its legacy carries on through multigenerational businesses, stories of local residents and cultural memory of the wider Greek community.
We are reliving these stories in order to preserve them.
This project will culminate in the installation of a 250m2 mural in August. Follow us as we reawaken ‘Footscray’s Hidden Hellenism’
